A Jonah Day

April 13th, 2010 by chrislovescatherine

Life with a two-year old is an adventure for a ready mom armed with Lysol, carpet cleaner, Clorox wipes, elbow grease, and a hefty supply of patience. Yesterday, I had the first three, some of the fourth, and a sufficient supply of the last to survive the day without hospitalization.

My day started with my little 17-month old boy who is cutting 5 teeth at once.  Poor baby doesn’t know what could ever make him happy except for mommy’s arms, which he can have, and lots of other things that he can’t have, like the trash, the phone, and going outside by himself in his pj’s.

And then there is my beautiful two-year old. She is potty trained, but over the last few days has decided that she prefers the floor just in front of the potty. During one potty break, I heard her calling me and found her with mouth and hands dyed blue from chewing Crayola tablets that are made to turn the bath water different colors. Poor baby was spewing out blue gunk (non-toxic, so no worries, but not so great tasting). Poor mommy, comforted and corrected her little girl and stared with dismay at the carpet in the bathroom covered with hundreds of navy blue dye spots. (Yes, whoever built this house had the brilliant idea of carpeting the bathroom and the dining room! Obviously childless!) So, I consulted Google for how to clean up the mess. The only answer took two hours of my day yesterday in scrubbing and is still not done. Poor mommy…. Here’s the funny part (now, but not at the time). Savannah “helped me” clean by saying “Here’s another spot, mommy!”, “What are you doing, mommy?”, “Are you all done, mommy?” By God’s grace, I didn’t say everything I was thinking to her. And one good thing may have come out of it. She said she didn’t want any more M&M’s. Apparently that’s what she thought the was eating.

After all this, my wonderful hubby and father-in law gave me nap time off and sent me to Sonic and my sister for consolation. Sarah’s laughter eased my soul. (Just wait little sis!)

Shortly after arriving home again, Savannah’s Pull-up failed in the living room leaving a yucky little heap on the floor. Fast draw momma disinfected with gusto, and grandpa was grateful it happened after I got home.

Today, the only disaster was more leakage on the bathroom floor and the discovery of this:

With all the tears of discouragement yesterday, I’m ok today, and I see that God is working in me. He’s teaching me to be like Him and find strength in His power. He’s teaching me to turn to Him for answers. Through serving my children, though so frustrating at times, I love them even more each day. This is God’s will for me. This is my dream come true! Yes, even when I catch Caleb, as I did last night, dunking his sisters toothbrush in the potty and then sucking the water out. Praise the Lord who is able to overcome ALL germs! Lysol can only kill 99.9%.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 1Th 5:18

And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. 2Co 12:9-10

What can be said after a day like this!
You are doing a good job! Such a good Mommy!” …do not grow weary of doing good.” 2 Thes 3:13

Welcome to the trenches! It does get easier and a little less messy as they get bigger :) Enjoy these days, they are fleeting!

Hmmmm, I can relate to you there, though Lance can’t talk enough to tell me I missed a spot yet. :-) I guess kids have to gain experience somehow. I’m glad you got to gain some relief with your sister, and yes, she can laugh now but just wait!!

Oh how I can relate!!! In a way it is so funny to think we now have these kinds of experiences, contrasting this stage of life with our single years of ministry and starched navy and white! :-D This is what it’s all about!
Keep up the great work, and thanks for sharing your story – it encouraged me today! :-)

About Chris & Catherine

It sometimes happens, even in the best of families, that a baby is born. This is not necessarily cause for alarm. The important thing is to keep your wits about you and borrow some money.
